Interconnection is implemented with five switches in three IXPs. Four switches are located in the Helsinki region: one in Otaniemi, Espoo (FICIX1) with an extension site in Telia Helsinki Data Center in Pitäjänmäki, and the other in Digita, Pasila, Helsinki (FICIX2) with an extension site in Equinix HE7. The third IXP is located at the city of Oulu (FICIX3).
The traffic volumes have grown steadily over the years. The technology and port speeds are therefore upgraded according to traffic volumes, as needed by our members. It is highly recommended that members connect to more than one interconnection point for reliability reasons.
FICIX is responsible of all switches, while every member is responsible of arranging connections for themselves. Members can choose from 10 gigabit or 100 gigabit Ethernet ports. Port aggregation is fully supported, as well as multicast and IPv6. Switches are operated by Service Providers selected by FICIX Association. These providers do hands-on maintenance for the IXP points 24/7/365.
